As a white South African who grew up under Apartheid, I have seen protest and pain close up. Once again I find myself in the midst of an upheaval centered on racism and violence. I hope and pray that my adopted country will find a way to free itself from toxic institutionalized discrimination of any kind.
America has beautiful bedrock principles, including the right to assemble peacefully, the right of free speech, and equal justice for all. If we heed them, we can live up to our best ideals and act as trustworthy allies of disadvantaged communities.
